The international agency Pro Board has unanimously awarded the Great Oaks Fire Academy with a 5-year renewal of its accreditation. The move came after an extensive process including a site visit by fire professionals from across the United States.
Great Oaks is one of just three agencies in Ohio that’s accredited by Pro Board; the distinction authorizes the Academy to offer 53 courses to train new fire fighters, experienced fire fighters, and corporate safety teams. “This process included the addition of a new certification for the Incident Commander course,” said Fire Academy commander Johnny Mason, “which makes us the first North American agency to do so! The other entity accredited to offer this course is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”
The Great Oaks Fire Academy is also the first agency in the world accredited to offer a drone piloting program for first responders.
Mason also said that the visitors noted the new $1.3 million fire training center, which includes a five-story fire tower and a state-of-the-art burn building.
Fire agencies from the region train at the Great Oaks Fire Academy; in addition, several classes of cadets graduate each year to begin careers as fire fighters.
The Pro Board accredits eligible agencies that use the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA’s) professional qualification standards. Pro Board certification is recognized by fire departments and agencies across the United States.
