The Great Oaks Marketing Management and Research program at Sycamore High School was named Outstanding Ongoing Program for 2019 by the SW Region, Ohio School Boards Association (SWOSBA).
Marketing Management and Research is a satellite program of Great Oaks Career Campuses offered at Sycamore High School. For many years the program, headed by instructor Mark Steedly, has been preparing students for further education and the world of business.
Marketing Management and Research students work with area businesses. Guest speakers to the program discuss their work as marketing professionals, and graduates succeed in their fields.
Graduates of the Great Oaks/Sycamore Marketing Management and Research program are marketing and business leaders with professional sports teams, local and regional companies, and more. One recent success story is Daniel Katz, a 21-year-old who had an idea. He graduated after his junior year and began the company D’s Naturals, whose primary products are nutrition bars called No Cow Bars as well as a line of nut butters. In just two years his company reached $10 million in annual revenue and attracted an equity investment from General Mills. Fast forward a year, and a $20 million contract with Kroger has catapulted Daniel and his company to the next level.
And students make a name for themselves while they’re still in high school. The program has been so successful in state competition through the DECA student business organization that the school’s chapter has been named “Most Outstanding DECA Chapter in Ohio” for five of the past seven years. In the last two years alone, 67 students qualified for international DECA competition.
The program was honored at the SWOSBA Annual Meeting this week.
