Noted education pioneer visits Scarlet Oaks

Students in the Early Childhood Education (ECE) program at Scarlet Oaks Career Campus met with nationally-known education professor, author, and advocate Dr. Valora Washington last week.Dr. Valora Washington

Dr. Washington, who was in Cincinnati for an education conference, stopped by the campus to talk with students about the early childhood education profession and their own training and future goals.  They were joined via video by ECE students from the Laurel Oaks Career Campus in Wilmington.

She answered the students’ questions about earning the Childhood Development Associate (CDA) credential, often called one of the most rigorous credentials for early childhood professionals to earn.

Sadie Bonifas, Scarlet Oaks ECE instructor, said it was important for her students to hear about the CDA credential.  “The CDA is a strong start for a career in early childhood education,” she said.  “Our goal is that every student earns this credential while in the Scarlet Oaks program.”

Dr.  Washington is a former professor at Antioch College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She is currently CEO of the Council for Professional Recognition.
