Blood Drive at Live Oaks Career Development Center

Milford, Ohio-October 21, 2008- On September 23, 2008, at Live Oaks Career Development Campus, Health Technology juniors and seniors held a blood drive. The blood drive was in the Health Technology lab at Live Oaks Career Development Campus. Hoxworth Blood Center came to the Live Oaks campus and set up in the lab. The blood drive was held from 8:30 a.m. to about 3:00 p.m. All students, teachers, and outsiders were welcome to donate as long as they were at least 16 years of age.

Hoxworth brought all of their equipment into the Health Technology lab. The skilled staff set up chairs for taking blood, a snack table, and booths to check in around the lab. Donors had appointments and had cards that told them their time to donate. When donors went into the lab, they had to check in, get their vital signs taken, and get an iron test. After the staff made sure the person was suitable to donate, he/she went to a chair to save a life.

According to Mrs. Ann Compton, the Health Technology teacher, “We broke our previous record of 76 units from five years ago.”

After all of the blood donated was counted, there were 89 units of blood collected. Each unit of blood saves four lives. A total of 356 lives were saved from the blood drive. Each unit can be separated into platelets and blood plasma to help several different people. Donors can also donate what is called double reds. Donating double reds is when just red blood cells are collected.

Live Oaks Career Development Campus has held a blood drive for over 15 years. The blood drives are always a success and a lot of lives get saved by the students and teachers.
