Laurel Oaks Masonry Students help to clean up Wilmington Theater

The Laurel Oaks Jr. Masonry Class is pictured applying a coat of Thura-Seal over the foundation of the South-End of the Murphy Theater in down-town Wilmington. Starting three days after school began this school year,  both the Junior and Senior Masons  began bricking-in 14 dressing room windows, The Masons then applied  stucco over their brick-work, then sealed their work and the existing foundation with a coat of Thura-Seal. The Juniors worked during their lab-time in the mornings, then the Seniors resumed working during their lab-time in the afternoons. The Senior Masons will complete this project by repairing and restoring a storage room on the East side of this structure. The Senior Masons will also repair some existing stucco work on the Porter House next to the theater, requested by Mr. Steve Brown.  Mr. Trevor Shoemaker and Board Member, Mr. Mark McKay, of the Murphy Theater had asked the Laurel Oaks Masonry Instuctor,  Shawn Wilkin, at the end of school last year if this project could be accomplished when school resumed in August.  Mr. Wilkin responded and said, “this would be a great start for the new Juniors to be able to start off the year being able to use their tools on an Applied Learning Project, after working with them on Campus for a few days.”  Mr. Wilkin, the Laurel Oaks Staff and Administration, and the Great Oaks Administration, are truly grateful for this opportunity to be able to work with the Laurel Oaks Masonry Class as they serve the Community and have an opportunity to work in a real-life setting.
