"Milford Marketing Student Elected Ohio DECA State Officer"

Andy Tan, a senior in the Milford High School Marketing Management & Research Program, was recently elected as the 2006-07 Ohio DECA Secretary/Treasurer during the annual Ohio DECA State Fall Leadership Conference held at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Columbus. Five Milford DECA members competed for state leadership positions.

Andy and two other Ohio DECA Secretary/Treasurer candidates prepared a four-minute speech, answered three formal impromptu questions, and three informal impromptu questions pertaining to their leadership abilities and future vision for Ohio DECA among an audience of 150 people. To earn the opportunity to run for a DECA state office, Andy had to travel to Columbus, on October 15th to pass a screening by the state department of education and current state officers. Andy will now become one of ten state officers who will lead 5,295 Ohio DECA members during the 2006-07 school year.

Besides Andy’s recognition, Eric Fancher placed “Top Ten” in the Ohio DECA Public Relations Male Representative event against thirty other Ohio DECA state competitors. April Camp received “Top Ten” in the Ohio DECA Public Relations Female Representative event. Nate Chase and Cyndie Hartman received “Top Ten” in the Ohio DECA Parliamentary Law event. Eric and April were required to take a written test on Ohio/National DECA facts, write a press release, present a one minute self-introduction, and complete a ten-minute interview on public relations, marketing, and leadership potential before a panel of judges. Nate and Cyndie were required to take a written test on Ohio/National DECA facts plus Parliamentary Law, present a one-minute self-introduction, and complete a ten-minute interview on marketing/parliamentary law.

Also traveling to Columbus and competing in Ohio DECA leadership competition was Marie Gertz in the Public Relations Female Representative event. DECA is an association for high school marketing students who are pursuing careers in marketing, sales, management, or entrepreneurship. Their marketing teacher/DECA advisor is Ed Pregitzer. The Milford Marketing Management & Research Program is a satellite of the Great Oaks Institute of Technology and Career Development District.
