Summary of the August 2005 Board of Directors Meeting

Technology Conference Center

 

 

Resolution for High Schools That Work

The Board of Directors approved a resolution supporting the strategic plan of High Schools That Work in Southwestern Ohio.

 

FY06 High Schools That Work State Grant

The Board of Directors approved an application to the Ohio Department of Education for four $12,000 grants that are available for Ohio High Schools That Work sites.  The funds support technical assistance, professional development and assessment services. 

 

Safe and Supportive School Grant

The Board of Directors approved collaborating on a grant application with Southern Ohio ESC for counseling services and instructional aides for the Great Oaks Alternative Center and the Clinton County Alternative Center.  This two-year grant totals $98,000. 

 

Projected Enrollment

Current enrollment at the four campuses and satellite locations in workforce development programs is 2833 students. Last year at this time, the total was 2894.

Curriculum Report

Mr.Harmon reported on the statewide career and technical marketing campaign to increase awareness of the value of career and technical education for students and our economy.

 

Great Oaks Salary Philosophy
The Board of Directors adopted a salary philosophy.

Report of the Board Chairman

Dr. Kathryn Lorenz reported that Great Oaks Family Day would be held on October 23, 2005 at the Museum Center.

Dr. Robin White reported on the following:

 

High Schools That Work Conference

Sixty associates attended the recent High Schools That Work conference in Nashville Tennessee, and seventeen associates presented workshops.

 

 

Ohio Association for Career and Technical Education Annual Conference

Dr. White recognized associates who received state awards or served on committees for the organization:

  • Steve Bowman – OACTE Treasurer, Executive Committee
  • Jon Quatman – Administration Division President
  • Mike Fritz – Marketing Education Division President
  • Harry Snyder – Legislation Committee Chair  

 

  • Outstanding Career and Technical Educator – Ann Jordan
  • Distinguished Service – Jan Brown, Bonnie Beckman
  • Pacesetter – Jane Bledsoe, Gary Gebhart, Mark Steedly

Congratulations were extended to Harry Snyder, of the Great Oaks Adult Workforce Development Division, who was elected OACTE President-Elect. 

 

Greater Cincinnati Job Expo

The Greater Cincinnati Job Expo at Sharonville Convention Center drew 100 employers and 1000 job seekers.   The Cincinnati Enquirer, Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce and the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services joined Great Oaks in sponsoring this event.

 

Adult Classes for Skill Development and Personal Enrichment

A new Adult Workforce catalog was recently mailed to constituents in the District.

 

Student Leadership Camp

 

Student leaders from all four campuses attended a two-day leadership camp that focused on team building, problem solving and planning for the year. 

 

Leadership Teams

Dr. White reviewed the changes in the campus administrative teams for next year.

 

New Associates’ In-service

Twenty-seven new associates are attending a weeklong orientation.

 

Opening Day

Opening Day for the 2005-06 school year will be at Live Oaks on August 19 for all full-time associates.  Before the program, an on-site health evaluation will be available for associates who choose this option.
