Program Description: The goal of the Special Needs Coordinator is to provide support to students in career and technical programs and insure their successful transition from school to community life. Approximately 24 percent of students at Great Oaks campuses are on Individual Education Plans (IEP’s) and 504 plans. At Great Oaks, Special Needs Coordinators on each campus support students with special needs in the following ways:
q Work with youth, families, school and agency personnel to determine career interests and specific job training areas for current and prospective students.
q Communicate with and provide support to the career and technical instructors and the academic teachers.
q Facilitate adaptation and modifications to the student’s career and technical program to insure success.
q Develop linkages among affiliate schools and community service agencies to assure effective transition from school to work for students.
q Assist in the development of the IEP, 504 or other individual plans and implement specific goals/objectives/activities for a successful transition to community life.
q Provide support to instructors by demonstrating model teaching strategies, working one on one or with small groups of students, and assisting with curriculum modifications.
q Work with students to develop organizational and study skills.
q Assist in the discipline process for students with special needs.
q Coordinate accommodations during testing situations.
q Work with consumers, employers, families, agency personnel, affiliate school personnel and other appropriate parties to problem solve issues related to success in skill training programs, academic classes, graduation requirements, and other transitional issues.
q Coordinate related services for students such as speech, interpreters, behavior specialists and vocational rehabilitation as necessary to meet the needs of individual students.
q Act as a liaison with affiliate school and agency personnel.
