The goal at Laurel Oaks is to offer students the knowledge and skills required for entry into the world of work. A good attendance record of 95% or better will help students meet employer expectations, certification standards and State of Ohio attendance laws. Laurel Oaks students are expected to follow the Laurel Oaks calendar in regards to attendance requirements. 95% attendance, including make-up hours, is required to receive a vocational certificate and a Career Passport. Students involved in early placement may not attend work on the same day they are absent from school.

ABSENCE REPORTING PROCEDURES Parents, guardian, students and the Laurel Oaks staff are responsible for student attendance as established by published Rules and Regulations of the Board of Directors of the Great Oaks Institute of Technology and Career Development. The procedures Outlined below must be followed when a Laurel Oaks student is absent. 1. Parent/Guardian must call Laurel Oaks at 937-382-1411 or 800-752-5480 before 9:00a.m. on the day of the absence. 2. Parent/Guardian shall prepare, sign and date a note stating the date(s) of absence and the reason(s) for absence. The note must also contain a telephone number for verification purposes. (After the 4th absence/tardy additional documentation will be required) 3. Upon return to school, the student must submit the above signed absence note to the office to receive an “admit to class” pass. The “admit to class” pass must be submitted to all of the student’s instructors. 4. The student must make arrangements with each instructor for make-up work and/or make-up time within three (3) days of the absence. 5. The student is responsible to complete all make-up work and/or make-up time as scheduled with instructors. 6. Make-up time must be done within the quarter in which the absence occurred unless there are extenuating circumstances. Extenuating circumstances must be approved by the program director in consultation with the instructor and the student.
AN “OCCURRENCE” REFERS TO EITHER AN ABSENCE, EARLY DISMISSAL OR TARDY. ABSENCES, EARLY DISMISSALS AND TARDIES ARE TOTALED BY SEMESTER.
The following are examples of documentation required by Laurel Oaks based on Ohio Revised Code.
1. Illness – This requires a doctor’s note 2. Medical, dental or court appointments 3. Religious observances 4. Death in the immediate family (immediate family shall be defined as mother, father, son, daughter, sister, brother, grandmother, grandfather and spouse) 5. Quarantine of the home 6. Emergency circumstances which the school administration judges as good and sufficient cause

Following the 4th tardy, the following documentation is required: doctor’s note, court documentation, documentation of funeral or religious observances or pre-approval by dean. If the required documentation is not provided then the following will be assigned.

CONSEQUENCES FOR ABSENCES AND EARLY DISMISSALS, WHICH ARE UNEXCUSED 1st OCCURENCE – 4th OCCURENCE (Combination of Tardies and Absences) Parent is informed by mail
