Bringing Up Grades
Laurel Oaks began to BUG students at the beginning of the 2003-2004 school year! We were able to add an additional period to each school day by beginning the day 15 minutes earlier and trimming a few minutes from lunch. This new period is known as the BUG period. BUG stands for Bringing Up Grades. During the BUG period, students have opportunities for enrichment and extra help in all subject areas. The extra time also means that we can minimize classroom interruptions, improve literacy, and provide common time for student activities.
Due to long travel times from home schools, it is frequently impossible for students to access teachers for additional help before or after school hours. Having the BUG period helps solve that problem. We appreciate the efforts by our affiliate schools to help our students meet the new daily time frame.
During the BUG period, students have the opportunity to:
Seek academic help.
Seek counseling/advising for careers or college.
Make up missed assignments.
Meet with student groups and organizations.
Have the same advisor for two years.
Work on enrichment projects that enhance learning.
Organized scheduled activities that occur during the BUG period are:
Career Technical Student Organization Meetings.
Career Advisement.
Silent-Sustained Reading.
Student Council.
National Technical Honor Society.
Student meetings with Home School counselors concerning graduation requirements.
