“There is so much offered at Live Oaks. If you don’t learn at least one thing every day, you’ve wasted that day,” shared Private First Class and 2001 alumnus Daniel Lovaas. Upon entering the Army after graduation from Milford High School, Daniel was given credit for his Junior ROTC training and promoted to a military E3 grade. PFC Lovaas spent 3 years in the military, serving in support units in Kuwait and Iraq—working as everything from a wrecker operator to a welder.
Daniel completed the highest level of wheeled diesel mechanics in the Army, working on equipment such as Humvees and 18-wheelers. “The auto tech program at Live provided me with the basics, and the military gave me the rest,” said Lovaas. He gives credit to his instructors Jerry McCabe and Rick Meyer, adding “You just couldn’t beat them. They would go to the ends of the earth to help you out.”
Daniel completed his ASE certification while in the Army, and remains an active part of the military as a National Guardsmen. To expand his education in diesel mechanics, he plans on attending the University of Northwestern next quarter. As an interesting note, Daniel’s mother, aunt and sister are all alumni of Live Oaks.
