“Live Oaks opened up so many opportunities for me!” said Mary Ann Horne, 1979 graduate of Milford High School and Live Oaks Early Childhood Education program. After graduation, Mary Ann went on to college to complete her Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Cincinnati. “A lot of families think Great Oaks can’t provide you with the skills for college. This just isn’t true. Great Oaks gives you lifelong skills in all areas, and provides you with a framework to build upon.” In fact, Mary Ann took her Live Oaks background and worked in a childcare center to support her way through college.
After completing her degree, Mary Ann taught elementary education in parochial schools and returned to Live Oaks for several years to teach in the EarlyStart program with at-risk children and families. Mary Ann is now the instructor of the Early Childhood Education program at the Scarlet Oaks campus. She knows the skills her students learn will help them in life, and feels that building positive self-esteem is the biggest lesson students can take away. “Every day of teaching is so different and so wonderful,” Mary Ann shared, “and I want all of my students to know that when they teach children some day, they will make a difference in the lives of their students!”
