Practical Nursing

Program objective is to prepare adults for a career in practical nursing. Program graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX, National Council Licensure Exam, for licensure to become a licensed practical nurse.  Visit www.nursing.ohio.gov for more information about the NCLEX exam.  Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) share in the responsibility of patient care within the established guidelines of the Nurse Practice Act.  Correlated theory and clinical practice in the area of basic nursing skill, adult and child health, maternal and infant care, mental health concepts, community health and gerontological nursing are included in the curriculum. Intravenous therapy is included in pre-licensure curriculum. Program is accredited by North Central Association/Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement, www.ncacasi.org.

 Length of course:  1350 hours

 

Days/Times:

  • Diamond Oaks: Part-time, 72 weeks, Monday-Thursday, 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Class begins May 19th, 2008.  Final date for acceptance of applications will be April 21, 2008. 
  • Health Professions Academy: Part-time, 72 weeks, Monday-Thursday, 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM, begins July 2008 and ends December 2009.
  • Scarlet Oaks: Full-time, 44 weeks, Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM, begins August 2008 and ends July 2009.
  • Scarlet Oaks:  Part-time, 72 weeks, Monday-Thursday, 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, begins September 2008 and ends March 2010.
  • Laurel Oaks:  Full-time, 44 weeks, Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM, begins September 2008 and ends August 2009.
  • Program dates subject to change.

 Tuition:

  • 2007/2008 year is $9980.00 which includes Books and Materials.
  • 2008/2009 year is $8775.00 and estimated $1620.00 for Books and Materials. Total estimated cost is $10,395.00.

 Step 1 in the admission process:

  • Attend an Information Meeting at Scarlet Oaks every Tuesday at 10:00 AM or every Wednesday at 4:00 PM.  Enter Door #3 at the Scarlet Oaks High School.  Meetings start promptly and attendees will not be allowed to enter late.
  • Or attend an Information Meeting at the Health Professions Academy every Monday at 4:00 PM or Friday at 9:00 AM.  Call 513-961-4220 to make a reservation.

 Step 2 in the admissions process:

  • Pass the WorkKeys test.  Visit www.act.org/workkeys/assess/foundational.html for testing information.
  • Take the TEAS, Test of Essential Academic Skills, test if interested in the May 2008 program.  Beginning 7/1/08, the TEAS test will not be required for the Practical Nursing program.  Visit www.atitesting.com for more information about the TEAS test.

 Step 3 in the admissions process:

  • Complete the Practical Nursing program application.  Examples of some of the required documentation include:
  • High School Diploma or GED, foreign born students must have their diploma from country of origin translated into English and reviewed by a credential evaluator in order to verify that it is equivalent to a U.S. high school diploma.  Visit www.naces.org/members.htm, NACES-Foreign, National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.  Students must be U.S. residents or legal residents.  Visit www.dhs.gov/ximgtn/.
  • Pre-entrance physical evaluation
  • Immunizations
  • Valid CPR card (professional rescuer or healthcare provider).  Great Oaks offers CPR classes at the Public Safety Services Center on the Scarlet Oaks Campus.  Call Arlene Zang at 513-612-5723 or zanga@greatoaks.com.
  • Legal background check is required.  For 2008/2009 programs, students must have complete BCII/FBI fingerprinting.  BCII/FBI fingerprinting is available at Scarlet Oaks.  Call Mary Beth Smith at 513-612-5800 or smithm@greatoaks.com to schedule, or visit http://www.ag.state.oh.us/business/fingerprint/data/index.asp for offices close to you.  
  • Be a State Tested Nursing Assistant, STNA before you begin your program.  Call Carol Sheil, STNA Coordinator at the Health Professions Academy, at 513-961-4220 or sheilc@greatoaks.com for information.  Step 4 in the admissions process:

According to the Department of Labor, www.lmi.state.oh.us, the outlook for “Licensed Practical Nurses is expected to grow 14% between 2006-2016, faster than the average for all occupations, in response to the long-term care needs of an increasing elderly population and the general increase in demand for health care services. Very good job prospects are expected.”

 

According to the Department of Labor, “median annual earnings of Licensed Practical Nurses were $36,550.00 in May 2006.  The middle 50% earned between $31,080.00 and $43,640.00.
