Hazardous Materials Programs
Public Safety Services offers the most advanced Hazardous Materials training available. All programs meet current standards of NFPA 472 and NPQS certificates are administered upon successful completion.

Hazardous Materials - Awareness Level (4 to 6 hours)
Awareness is the starting point. This class is required in many states as rudimentary knowledge for firefighters, EMS personnel, police officers, and many in business and industry. This is the basic knowledge that helps to keep people alive. This is the information that keeps people from doing something incredibly stupid, blundering into an area when they should stay out and teaches them to wait for those with more experience and more training. This class is the foundation for all common sense principles that are used to build the remainder of your hazardous materials training on. This course teaches the difference between flammable and explosive, between oxidizers and compressed gases. Students learn about placarding, labeling, and shipping papers. They learn when to attempt to gather more information, where, and how, and when to get away. They learn when to do something and when to start evacuation. A good general class for almost anyone and a requirement for those wishing to continue their haz-mat career.

Hazardous Materials - Operations Level (16 hours) Prerequisite is Hazardous Materials- Awareness
This course is for those who want or need to do more. This course delves into the beginnings of serious hazardous material emergency rectification. This class is usually the required basic level of education for big time haz-mat team members. Again, we have altered this course to reflect the in-plant approach to hazardous materials emergencies. The Operations Level course puts in-plant groups in touch with the real nitty gritty of haz-mats. Team members learn about using the proper advanced protective gear. They learn about solving more technically complex situations. And they learn about methods of solving more dangerous situations. They learn how to operate in full team evolutions and with other teams, during dangerous incidents. Safety is reinforced at all levels. Advanced multilevel operations are addressed.

Hazardous Material - Technician Level (24 hours) - Prerequisite is Hazardous Materials - Operations Level
This is the working level for most haz-mat teams out there. This is the level that gets you into Team Mode. This course will polish your group into a working team, at a more advanced level. The course teaches your team how to deal with dangerous incidents. This course starts at the beginning, covers incident command, and extends all the way to the final critique. The course emphasizes how to safely handle medium size to major multi-day incidents. And it teaches how to handle them, properly, from the minute they occur to the very end. The course works with advanced techniques, covers all levels of personal protection, and the tools it takes to do the job properly. It covers in-plant emergencies, trucking emergencies (remember, those trucks at your docks may have other substances on board for other facilities), and if your facility has on site rail lines - rail emergencies. This course utilizes many work exercises and scenarios. The course ends with a for real scenario, utilizing much of what was learned during the course.
